Angelica Salem and Sarah Edwards, who were students together at Stamford’s Trinity High School, teamed up to perform their unique talents Saturday at the Atco Dragway in Atco, N.J.
Edwards took part in one of her first races as a professional jet car driver. And Salem, a singer, was on hand to preform the National Anthem for the opening of her race.
Even though Salem has sung for a large crowd at a Chicago Bulls game, Saturday’s performance was particularly special — and emotional. “Honestly, I had chills the entire time,” Salem said.
Salem said she has always wanted to go to one of Edwards’ races. When presented with a chance to perform at Edwards’ race, she couldn’t say no.
“We’ve always kind of been each other’s partner in crime and each other's support system, so it was just an awesome opportunity,” Salem said.
Edwards, who stopped by Stark Elementary School last November to demonstrate her old dragster, is now a professional racer sponsored by Hanna Motorsports. Her new car, the Queen of Diamonds II Jet Dragster, can travel nearly 310 mph.
Saturday was one Edward’s first big races and having Salem there made it even more special.
“It was kind of a little bit of a surreal moment to stand there and watch her sing at my home track,” Edwards said.
Edwards said it’s rare that two friends can share that experience. “You can’t believe that you are both doing this together right now in this moment,” she said.
Salem, a classically trained Broadway singer who has also recorded with rap star Wyclef Jean, hopes to sing the National Anthem again at future races. “I’m really hoping that Sarah and I can team up a few more times,” Salem said.
